unorthodox

The old woman sitting,

The OED word of the day for the erasure poem|commentary is 'lump.'

Painted with the Seattle plein air meetup group today at Fishermen's Terminal. As usual this year, it didn't even pretend to clear|warm up til we were finishing up. A google search finds that the fireboat Alki (what ELSE would I paint?) was built in 1927. Still looking spiffy and ready for action.

The OED word of the day for the erasure poem is 'viscous.'

As often happens with the really old citations, I updated the spelling of some of the words. Such was the case with 'gossamer.'

In confirming that the 17th century spelling had an extra 'e', I visited Wikipedia's entry for gossamer and found a rather amazing list of what gossamer can reference. Here is a sampling for your amusement:

Gossamer may refer to:

* a character in the Looney Tunes cartoons
* a human-powered aircraft
* the code name of the motherboard used in first-generation Apple G3 Macs
* a large X-Files fan fiction archive
* a song by The Smashing Pumpkins
* the rings of Jupiter
* an entry-level crank set for bicycles

... AND - this slipped by Wikipedia but not Peggy - Gossamer Wump, both a 1949 children's record about a boy who learns to play the triangle and, obviously, the only possible name for Peggy & Jeff's first cat.

Cyberpunk

Elliott Bay Cargo, by Susan K. MillerAs a clear escape
Beyond an ordinary Cyberpunk
Susan asked for
All manner of Liberties
and to enjoy
without disturbance,
a Renaissance Stud.

What should I call it?
Boldness,
or at least a Dexterity of wit!

Sublime

is it real or fictitious
which produces our delight

Life is a Scramble,
and age challenges our power
to become exquisitely sensible.

The OED online word of the day, complete with a citation from the 1991 issue of that ever-popular journal Renaissance Studies, is 'immunity.'

middle age

Under the shade of melancholy,
mind may enjoy the advantages of
middle age,

full of sweet Songs
behind which her scream/
ragged, regal.

Listener
It [is] hard to find The path.
Soft words of grace gliding near,
wild Promises and Bargains between them.

It was a good season,
whose heart's best are etched into wrinkles,
acquiring a peculiar glory
‘What's the point?’ they seem to say.

I leave alone, with my own unsettled thoughts...
I wonder how we should regard loss.

September is easy

Fishermen's Terminal, Seattle - watercolor by Susan K. MillerSeptember is easy

fasting on a full stomach.

a day full of the
glorious poetry
of simple Times

. . . . . . . .

The OED word of the day for the erasure poem|commentary is 'preach.'

The Seattle Plein Air meetup group convened at Fishermen's Terminal today. From mid-morning to early afternoon, it went from dark gray to bright light, four layers of clothes to two... I said to Peggy that it was like trying to paint in a room and having someone come in and turn lights off, then 10 minutes later turn the bright ones on, turn on the aircon, turn on the heat, change the lights again.

I note that "plein air" is one vowel away from being an anagram for 'real pain'! :)
