The OED word of the day for the poem|weather report is "Indian summer." We should be so lucky.

Seriously, it is "hellacious."

The Oxford lads are off the dessert kick finally, but the OED word of the day is cockapoo. Nothing against them, but not enough meat on the etymological bones to get a poem.

So, today's erasure poem|commentary is from the NY Times review of the Werner Herzog film "Cave of Forgotten Dreams," which is currently playing in West Seattle and is way cool.

Well, I was close in my prediction of the OED word of the day: it's 'marchepane,' which is how one wrote 'marzipan' back in Shakespeare's day.

I don't know why (is it National Dessert Week in the UK?) the Oxford lads are in a diabetic coma mood, but I went with them in this erasure poem|commentary. We'll see if they go for four in a row tomorrow (pavlova, apple-pie, marchepane, TBD)

Today marks the second anniversary of this blog. Not quite 730 entries, but darn close - Niçoise Apples sans card readers notwithstanding.

A special bow of thanks to those of you who, with your comments, let me know I'm not howling into a totally black hole of cyberspace! :)

The OED word of the day for the erasure poem | commentary is 'breatharian.' That would be someone who believes we can live on air alone.

My favorite citation is from a London newspaper: "Back in 1983, most of the leadership of the Breatharian Institute in California resigned following an outrage by Wiley Brooks, the 47-year-old leader who claimed not to have eaten for 19 years, but was caught sneaking into a hotel and ordering a chicken pie."

Per a previous word of the day, "O, ye boobies!"

Yet another bizarro and obsolete word of the day from the OED for the erasure poem|commentary: 'scouch.'

On my way to the bus this morning, I found a 'turtle green' crayon and picked it up. Peggy and I set out to sketch King Street Station and stumbled across some public art granite seats, sandblasted with quotes and images related to the railroad. The basis of this sketch is a rubbing from one of them. And it was fate: the CenturyLink Field sign and Sounder banner are, of course, turtle green!!

The short boring definition of the OED word of the day wasn't enough for an erasure poem. The word is 'jobble.'
Don't feel bad if you don't know what that is: it was in use 500 years ago to describe a small load of hay. I'm thinking that the Oxford lads might be candidates for the reality show "Hoarders."

Pictured is another take on my new favorite bromeliad, this time as a collage.

The OED word of the day for the erasure poem|commentary is 'numpty,' originally Scottish slang for idiot.

I dedicate the first citation listed to my niece Victoria, as she enters middle school: "How is it I get all the numpties in my class?"

The OED word of the day for the erasure poem|commentary is the verb 'job.' My favorite definition (both rare and obsolete) is: to job faces. That meant to kiss!

It's hard to imagine Lucy in Peanuts screaming: "Auugh! I've been jobbed face by a dog! I have dog germs! Get some hot water! Get some disinfectant! Get some iodine!"
